Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) – The Atlanta Braves said Tuesday they have
declined to tender 2015 contract offers to right-handed pitchers Kris Medlen,
Brandon Beachy, and Gus Schlosser, making them free agents.
Medlen and Beachy both had Tommy John surgery for the second time in their
careers in March.
Medlen, 29, had his ulnar collateral ligament reconstructed for the first time
in 2010. He went 25-13 in 82 combined games, including 43 starts, during the
2012 and 2013 seasons with a 2.47 ERA and 277 strikeouts in 335 innings.
He is 34-20 in his career with a 2.95 ERA over parts of five seasons with the
Braves.
Beachy, 28, returned in July 2013 after recovering from his first Tommy John
surgery and was 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts before developing elbow
pain in late August.
He underwent a procedure that September to have particles removed from his
elbow and made three spring training starts this year before the pain came
back. He is 14-11 with a 3.23 ERA in 46 career starts for the Braves.
Schlosser was 0-1 with a 7.64 ERA in his first 15 major-league games this past
season.
