Pernice in lead at Charles Schwab Cup Championship

Scottsdale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) – Tom Pernice, Jr. opened up with a 5-under
65 in Thursday’s first round and he holds a 1-shot lead at the season-ending
Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Pernice has won three times on the Champions Tour, including once this season
at the Principal Charity Classic.

Bernhard Langer, who has already secured the season-long Charles Schwab Cup
after a sixth-place finish at last week’s AT&T Championship, is tied for
second with three others at 4-under 66. He is joined there by Joe Durant, Jay
Haas and Kenny Perry after the first round on the Conchise Course at the
Desert Mountain Club.

Billy Andrade, Olin Browne, Russ Cochran and Gene Sauers are all tied for
sixth after 2-under 68s. Colin Montgomerie, who is second in the Charles
Schwab Cup standings, finished at 1-over 71 along with defending champion Fred
Couples.
